Composing the film score for The Harvest was a deeply personal experience. Directed by Caylee So—whose first feature was Cambodia’s official submission to the 92nd Academy Awards—The Harvest follows a young man’s return home to care for his estranged father. The film’s intimate exploration of family, memory, and cultural legacy inspired me to craft music that honors both the subtleties of everyday emotion and the weight of unspoken history.
A Stellar Cast and a Proud Debut
– Doua Moua ( Gran Torino, Disney’s Mulan ) brings quiet strength to the role of the devoted son, grounding the story in genuine warmth.
– Perry Yung ( Warrior , The Knick, John Wick: Chapter 2 ) embodies the father’s silent resilience, delivering a performance that resonates long after the credits.
– Directed by Caylee So, whose lyrical storytelling and sensitivity to cultural nuance make this film a standout debut.
Composing the Score
For The Harvest, I wove together sparse piano motifs, ambient textures, and traditional Hmong-inspired phrases. The goal was to reflect the characters’ inner lives: moments of quiet reflection punctuated by swells of emotional release. Throughout the score, you’ll hear delicate percussive elements that echo ancestral rhythms, alongside modern harmonic layers that speak to the film’s intergenerational themes.
